Tips To Help You Secure Your Garage

Think about how much stuff you have in your garage that's actually pretty valuable. Have you done everything possible to ensure that your garage is secure? Here, you'll find a few things that you can do to improve the security of your garage.

Install a Quality Lock

There are four main types of locks for your garage door—bolt, padlock, anchor, and electronic.

Bolt Locks – Much like a deadbolt, it operates by pushing a bolt through the track of the garage door. When engaged, the door will not be able to open at all. This type of lock can be accessed from inside or outside the garage—however you set it up.

Padlock – A standard padlock is used. A latch mechanism is drilled into the floor of the garage and another on the door itself. The padlock slides through the two latches to secure the door. The latches can be installed inside the garage or outside, but for optimum security, it's best to install them inside.

Anchor – Anchors are installed interiorly. A bolt mechanism connects to anchors that are drilled into the garage floor.

Electronic – This requires electricity, and typically functions with the garage door opener. A keypad is installed outside the garage door. You are required to enter your pin before the garage door will open.

Cover the Windows and Keep the Door Closed

If you limit the visibility into the garage, you'll reduce the chances of someone trying to break into it. If someone can look into the window and see that you have an expensive chainsaw sitting out on the workbench, they'll be more likely to attempt to break in.

You can cover windows with tint so that you can still see out, or you can frost them using a glass etching kit. Another option is to hang curtains on the windows in the garage.

Invest in a WiFi Camera

WiFi cameras are becoming one of the most popular home security add-ons. You can pick one up for very little and set it up yourself. Install the camera just outside your garage. When anyone approaches the garage, your smartphone will receive an alert and you'll be able to view a live feed of what's going on around your garage.

Talk with your local garage door service to learn more about what can be done to secure your garage. Hopefully, when it's all said and done, you'll be able to leave home without worrying about anyone breaking into your garage.
